Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Clutch plays push Men's Basketball past Statesmen

Men's Basketball picked up a hard-fought win at home Wednesday night.

The Ravens knocked off the William Penn University Statesmen, 71-68, winning the game in the final minute.

A pair of free throws by WPU knotted up the game at 68-68 with 40 seconds to play. With the clock ticking down, Deaglan Sullivan made a strong drive into the paint and scored what turned out to be the game-winning basket with 15 seconds to play. After two missed free throws by the Statesmen, Brycen LaRue knocked down a free throw and then Sullivan rebounded LaRue's missed second attempt to ice the game and give the Ravens a 3-point win.

LaRue scored a game-high 19 points to go along with 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Sullivan scored 9 points – all in the second half – and had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Jack Vander Woude knocked in 16 points and had 7 boards, Haggan Hilgendorf scored 11, and Preston Reynolds filled up the stat sheet with 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks, 2 steals and 4 points.

The Ravens shot 50% in the game, holding the Statesmen to 40.9% from the field. After WPU took their only lead of the half with a 3-pointer at the 15-minute mark, LaRue answered with his own basket from deep and the Ravens never trailed again.

The Ravens took a 6-point lead into the break, leading 34-28. The Ravens first 12 points came on 3-pointers as Vander Woude knocked down a pair of treys, and then was followed up by 3-pointers from LaRue and Hilgendorf.

The Ravens then got into the paint, scoring 16 inside as they shot 42.4% from the field in the first half and held the Statesmen to 32.4% shooting.

Both teams shot better in the second half but the Ravens showed toughness in earning the win.

The Ravens (6-8, 5-5 Heart) will remain in conference play with a 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 game at Grand View University.
