Women's Basketball hands Missouri Valley first loss in Heart play

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Benedictine Women's Basketball won its second conference road game on Tuesday night, handing Missouri Valley College its first loss of the Heart season.

Benedictine matched its conference high in rebounds, finishing with 46 while pulling 46 rebounds as they earned a 66-61 win over the Vikings. The Ravens finished with 18 offensive rebounds which aided a 18-4 advantage in second chance points and a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint.

After trading the lead early in the first quarter, Missouri Valley pulled ahead by as much as 7 before Benedictine battled back to take a 22-19 lead as time expired in the quarter off a 3-pointer from Oen Deters.

The Ravens opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets to pull ahead by 7 before the Vikings answered to pull back ahead. In total, the lead changed hands 6 times throughout the second quarter before Benedictine took a 38-37 lead into halftime on a basket from Addie Kane.

Benedictine led wire-to-wire in the second half, but was only able to pull ahead by 6 points twice on a 3-pointer from Riley Bruggeman with 3:44 left in the quarter and again on a basketball with 1:05 left in the quarter. 

After leading 51-48 headed into the fourth quarter, Nicole Storck gave the Ravens their largest lead of 8 points on back-to-back baskets with just over 4 minutes left to play. Missouri Valley hit a pair of 3-pointers over the final 44 seconds to make a last-second push, but the Ravens sealed the game from the free throw line with 3 free throws from Deters and Bruggeman over the final 18 seconds to seal the win.

Bruggeman led the Ravens with a game-high 24 points with 9 rebounds. Nicole Storck finished with 14 points while Deters finished with 11 points. 

Benedictine remains on the road, traveling to Leavenworth on Monday, Dec. 1, for a 7 p.m. game against the University of St. Mary. They are scheduled to return home for their next Heart game on Dec. 6 at Noon with Mount Mercy University.
