BALDWIN CITY – Baker University used an 18-3 run over 6 minutes late in the second half on Wednesday night to avoid the upset bid from Benedictine Men's Basketball.
The Ravens pulled within 4 points on a layup from Preston Reynolds with 8:40 remaining in the game before the Wildcats scored 12 straight en route to the 89-70 win.
Brycen LaRue opened the game with a jumper for the Ravens before Baker scored the next 8 points to pull in front by 6. A 3-pointer from Jack Vander Woude followed by a layup from Haggan Hilgendorf cut the Wildcats lead down to a point but the Ravens were unable to regain the lead.
After Reynolds pulled the Ravens back within a basket, the Wildcats answered with a 12-0 that pushed their lead to 14 just under midway through the half. The Ravens erased a 17-point deficit over the final 4 minutes by holding Baker to just two field goals over that stretch to pull within 8 headed into halftime.
Baker stopped Benedictine's momentum from the end of the first half with 7 points to open the second half. That stretched their halftime lead to 15 points before Benedictine used a 12-6 run to pull within 9 points with 11 minutes left to play. The Ravens scoring run continued with back-to-back 3-pointers from Harrison Kisling and Larry Parker III and a layup from Reynolds that pulled Benedictine within 4 points, 64-60, with 8:40 left to play.
Baker held the Ravens scoreless over the next four minutes while scoring 12 straight to pull away and end the Ravens upset bid.
LaRue finished with a game-high 17 points as 4 Ravens scored in double figures. Vander Woude scored 15 off 5 3-pointers, followed by Reynolds with 11 and Deaglan Sullivan with 10.
The Ravens wrap up the regular season at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Grand View University as they celebrate Senior Day before the game.
