Women's Basketball won a battle of two teams with long winning streaks Wednesday night.
The Ravens defeated the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats, 71-57, at home.
The Ravens entered the game with an 8-game winning streak and the Wildcats came in riding an 11-game winning streak. Both teams battled from beginning to end.
The Ravens held a 2-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but baskets by
Nicole Storck,
Oen Deters, and a 3-pointer by
Hattie Gros helped the Ravens build a 13-point lead with just under 5 minutes to play.
As they had all night, though, the Wildcats battled back and got within 7 points. The Ravens closed out the win by scoring the final 7 points and putting an end to the Wildcats winning streak.
Gros scored a career high 19 points to lead the Ravens and was joined in double figures by
Riley Bruggeman and
Kelli Storck's 12 points, and
Nicole Storck's 10 points. Deters and
Kyla Fitzgerald each added 9 points.
Nicole Storck also had 8 rebounds and Deters added 7 assists.
The Ravens held the Wildcats without a point for the opening 7 minutes of the ballgame and turned Culver-Stockton over 7 times in the first quarter. This helped the Ravens build a 15-6 lead after the first period.
Culver-Stockton opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to level the game at 15-15. Soon after, though, the Ravens ripped off a 10-0 run to take a 27-17 lead.
The Wildcats had another answer, closing out the first half on a 7-3 run. The Ravens took a 30-24 lead into the break. Bruggeman and
Kelli Storck each had 10 points in the opening half to lead the Ravens.
The teams continued to battle back-and-forth in the third quarter. The Wildcats used defensive pressure to create turnovers that led to points on the other end, briefly taking a 2-point lead. However, Gros answered for the Ravens, knocking down three 3-pointers to help the Ravens to a 47-45 lead heading into the final frame. It was in the fourth quarter the Ravens were able to put separation between the teams and earn the win.
The Ravens (18-5, 14-1 Heart) will take their nine-game winning streak on the road, playing at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at Graceland.
