(RV) Softball splits home doubleheader with MNU

Ravens Softball split a home doubleheader Friday afternoon against the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers.

MNU came out on top, 9-3, in Game 1, but the Ravens answered with a 3-1 in in Game 2.

Game 1

The Ravens fell behind 4-0 early in Friday's opener, ultimately losing 9-3.

The Ravens attempted a comeback in the third inning, plating 3 runs to cut the deficit to 1 run. Ryan Cooper bunted for a hit to leadoff the bottom of the third, then scored on Alena Velilla's triple. With that three-bagger, Velilla tied the single-season program record with her fifth triple of the season.

Velilla scored the Ravens second run on a wild pitch, then Kaleigh Small homered to cut the MNU lead to 4-3.

That's as close as the Ravens got in the opener. The Pioneers scored 3 runs in the fourth, then 2 runs in the fifth inning to earn the 6-run victory.

Lily SinghDhillon (4-7) started in the circle for the Ravens, giving up 4 runs in 2 innings of work. Lacey Foster came on in relief, giving up 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

Game 2

The Ravens earned the split with a 3-1 win in Friday's finale.

Amanda Waymire opened the scoring with a leadoff home run in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Cooper bunted for a hit and scored on a double by Velilla. A sacrifice fly later in the inning brought home Velilla to give the Ravens a 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers plated an unearned run in the fourth inning, but that was all they could scratch across against Bailey Selvage, who pitched a complete game for the win.

Selvage (14-7) struck out 5 and scattered 7 hits in the win. Velilla and Rhiannon Martin each had 2 hits in the game.

The Ravens (30-16, 17-9 Heart) close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at home against Peru State College on Saturday, April 25.
