Ravens Volleyball won a five-set thriller Wednesday evening.
The Ravens overcame the Briar Cliff University Chargers 2-1 lead in the match to comeback for a 3-2 win.
The Ravens won the opening set, 25-20, capping off a set full of scoring bursts with an impressive display from the service line.
The Chargers put together the first quality run of the set, rattling off 8-straight to take a 14-8 lead. The Ravens answered back with 4-straight to close the gap, later leveling the score at 19-19.
Stefania Scomazzon took over the set with her serve, closing things out with four-straight aces to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Ravens took an early lead in the second set, but the Chargers found their footing and leveled the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 set win.
The Ravens jumped out to a 14-8 lead, but Briar Cliff went on an extended 14-3 run that gave them control of the set. The Chargers closed out the 6-point win to send the teams into the third set tied up.
Scomazzon added 4 aces in the second set to give her 8 on the night, matching Haley Cahill's Ravens record for aces in a single game.
The Ravens nearly pulled off an impressive comeback in the third set, but it was the Chargers who won 25-23, taking a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Briar Cliff led 23-19 but the Ravens scored 4-straight points to tie the set. The streak started with a kill by
Riley Hunt, then
Barbara Terra notched three-straight kills to level things at 23-23. The Chargers managed to rebound with the final 2 points to win the set.
Terra had 5 kills in the set and Scomazzon recorded her 9
th ace, setting a new single-match record for the Ravens.
The fourth set saw the Ravens bounce back in a big way.
Bridget O'Sullivan's kill had the Ravens in good position with a 17-9 lead.
The Chargers battled back a bit, but Terra notched 3 of her 7 kills in the set to help the Ravens regain momentum and
Wren VanCleave closed out the 25-17 set win with an ace, sending the match to a fifth and final set.
The Ravens fell behind 4-1 early in the pivotal fifth set, but a 9-2 Ravens run, capped off with a
JoJo Vander Woude kill, gave the Ravens a 10-6 lead and forced a Chargers timeout.
Briar Cliff answered and cut the Ravens lead to 13-12 but kills from Terra and O'Sullivan closed out the 15-12 set win, and 3-2 Ravens match win.
Scomazzon and Terra finished with 21 kills, each. Vander Woude and O'Sullivan each added 9 kills to help round out the Ravens attack, which had to deal with a Chargers team that recorded 15 team blocks. Scomazzon also finished with 10 aces.
VanCleave recorded 56 assists and had 17 digs.
Kelly DeMeulenaere had 12 digs, and
Lainee Mustain and
Hailey Ugolini each had 10 digs.
The Ravens (3-1) will take to the road for the first time in the 2026 season when they travel to Bellevue, Neb. for the Bruin Classic. They'll take on Xavier University of Louisiana, Valley City State University, Benedictine University Mesa, and No. 8 Bellevue University.
